On the list of France’s most charming villages, Kaysersberg is one of the most frequently mentioned. In the east of France, this exceptional commune attracts its share of curious visitors all year round, but it’s at Christmas that the enchantment is felt most strongly. In keeping with Alsatian tradition, towns here and there adorn themselves with beautiful illuminations and celebrate the festive season in style. In this vein, Kaysersberg is no exception, offering one of the most idyllic getaway ideas at this time of year.
The most charming Christmas village within easy train reach of the capital
We’ve already told you about our interest in the superb village of Kaysersberg. Voted one of France’s favorite villages in 2017, this Alsatian town pulls out all the stops for Christmas, making it a favorite destination as soon as winter sets in. As we all know, Advent is a special time in Alsace, and a trip to Kaysersberg is the epitome of this enchantment.
Christmas means beautiful decorations and illuminations, and Kaysersberg is the perfect example. Architectural gems such as the Town Hall, the Church of the Holy Cross and the Church Square with its half-timbered houses are all decked out in lights, garlands and colors. In the streets of the imperial city, all you have to do is stroll around after dark to appreciate the spectacle. As we stroll along, we’ll be sure to pick up a little mulled wine or bredalas, those delicious little cakes specially made for the festive season.
The highlight of the show, however, is the village Christmas market. Each visit is an enchanted interlude. Several weekends in a row during November and December, the market opens its doors to the public, with numerous producers and designers waiting behind their stalls in small wooden chalets. Here, you’ll find a host of creations from local craftsmen and women, so you can make your own little Christmas finds. And when it comes to culinary delights, in addition to the great classics such as spiced mulled wine, you’ll find some great Alsatian specialities such as kougelhopfs, berawackas and manalas. Perfect for sampling the local culture!
The period is also synonymous with a number of Christmas exhibitions and concerts. So Kaysersberg is in tune with the festive season in every respect. All you have to do is visit!
