Just 40 minutes from Paris, there is a place that many discover to their surprise. Neither a simple park, nor a classic monument, nor an ordinary promenade, the Axe Majeur in Cergy is a monumental open-air work of art that stretches across the city for over 3 kilometers. Conceived as a massive landscape sculpture, this site impresses as much with its scale as with its setting.
With its white columns, red footbridge, giant staircases, and unobstructed view of the Oise Valley, the site is one of the most remarkable walks in the Île-de-France region. Conceived in 1980 by artist Dani Karavan, the Axe Majeur accompanies the construction of the new city of Cergy-Pontoise. The idea was ambitious: to create a strong, visible, symbolic landmark capable of structuring the area while providing a large public space. The result is now a path punctuated by twelve stations, each with its own unique atmosphere.
The tour often begins on the Cergy-Saint-Christophe side, easily accessible by RER A or Transilien. You then walk between the famous Twelve Columns, undoubtedly the most photographed spot on the site. Aligned facing the landscape, they give the place an almost Mediterranean feel. Further on, the staircases descend toward the lower parts of the city, with a panorama that widens at each landing.

From here, you can overlook the bends of the Oise River, the Cergy ponds, and, on a clear day, certain lines of the Grand Paris area come into view in the distance. Few spots in the Île-de-France region offer such a wide-open view so close to the capital.
As you descend, the path leads to the amphitheater, the red footbridge, and then the riverbanks. This more contemporary section, added in the 2000s, further enhances the site’s spectacular character. The contrast between white concrete, vegetation, water, and sky is particularly striking at sunset. The Axe Majeur was also awarded the “Remarkable Contemporary Architecture” label in 2022!

The site appeals to architecture enthusiasts as much as it does to walkers, photographers, or simply curious visitors. Some come for a quick stroll around the columns, while others walk the entire route all the way to the Cergy ponds. In short, while it remains relatively unknown outside the Val-d’Oise, the Axe Majeur is well worth the detour.
