This former royal city is perfect for a spring getaway
A true symbol of this medieval city, the castle is a wonderful way to begin your visit. Built in the early 13th century during the reign of Philip Augustus, it is one of the few medieval fortresses in Île-de-France that are still so well-preserved. Towers, ramparts, moats, and the keep are still visible, making it easy to imagine what this stronghold must have been like in its heyday. The site has had many uses, serving as a royal fortress and then a prison until the 19th century.
Around the castle, the town center unfolds amid narrow streets, historic houses, and market halls, creating a timeless atmosphere. You stroll along without rushing, passing a bakery, a quiet square, and a few outdoor cafés. Dourdan retains a simple, authentic charm, a world away from some of the more touristy destinations in Île-de-France.
