On the shores of Lake Geneva, just a few minutes from Montreux, a silhouette immediately catches the eye. Chillon Castle stands directly on the water, as if perched between the lake and the mountains. With its towers, ramparts, and unique location, it is one of the most impressive sites in Switzerland and one of the country’s most visited attractions.
An extraordinary medieval castle perched on the water
After taking the train from Paris to Geneva, it takes about an hour to reach Montreux, followed by a few more minutes to get to the castle, either on foot along the lake or by bus.
The site dates back to medieval times, with the first structures built around the 12th century. The castle then served as a strategic point to control the route between northern and southern Europe. Over time, it was expanded, transformed, and then restored, which explains the diversity of spaces we see today.

The tour is self-guided, allowing you to explore the various rooms, inner courtyards, and narrow passageways. You’ll pass through the grand reception halls and bedrooms, as well as the vaulted cellars, which are located right at water level.
The castle is also associated with a literary reference. Lord Byron drew inspiration from it to write *The Prisoner of Chillon*, which contributed to its international fame. An inscription by the poet is still visible in the cellars, adding a touch of mystery to the visit.

Outside, the path along the lake allows you to step back and view the castle from different angles. In the morning, the light illuminates the mountain-facing facade. At the end of the day, the sun sets over the lake and the colors become softer. In both cases, the setting remains particularly photogenic.
Beyond the castle itself, a getaway can easily be extended in Montreux. The lakeside promenade, flower-lined quays, and terraces allow you to round out the day at a leisurely pace. Some even choose to continue on to the Lavaux vineyards, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, located just a few minutes away by train.
Between the lake, the mountains, and medieval architecture, Chillon Castle alone is worth planning a getaway to Switzerland!
