Attention all fans of Japanese culture, and manga lovers in particular: the Musée Guimet is about to inaugurate a major exhibition on Japanese comics. Announced as a surprise on Twitter, it already promises to be an unmissable event for enthusiasts and the merely curious alike. Doors open on November 19!
Manga in the spotlight at a major forthcoming exhibition
In 2024, we lost Akira Toriyama, the famous mangaka behind Dragon Ball. It was in response to this announcement that the museum’s communications director spoke to us for the first time about the “Manga, currently in preparation for 2025” exhibition.
After revealing the subtleties of Nepalese art, sharing the dreamlike world of Hiroshige and, as it does every year, bringing Chinese New Year to life, the Musée Guimet is currently preparing a fine tribute to the art of manga in Paris. A fine way of celebrating pop culture for an institution that normally gives pride of place to the more traditional arts.
An announcement that has caused quite a stir among lovers of this popular art form. The exhibition will trace the evolution of manga from its roots to the most contemporary creations. Key themes will include the birth of pre-publication magazines, the role of major Japanese publishers, the impact of animated adaptations and how the art conquered Europe. The museum also plans to exhibit original plates, old editions from its Asian collections, and objects linked to Japanese graphic culture – an ensemble rarely seen in Paris!
📍Location: Musée Guimet – 6 Pl. d’Iéna, 75116 Paris
📆 Dates: from November 19, 2025
