It’s one of the best getaways from Paris for the first weekend in September. The Braderie de Lille returns on September 5 and 6 with 34 hours of almost nonstop bargain hunting in the streets of downtown Lille. Just over an hour from the capital by train, this is a must-see event for flea market enthusiasts.
A massive flea market just an hour from Paris
Last year, the city reported 2.5 million visitors, 51 kilometers of stalls, and more than 5,200 exhibitors. This year, it’s more of the same: antiques, furniture, vinyl records, clothing, tableware, collectibles, and simple treasures dug out of attics will take over much of Lille. There will even be a BuzzAttack booth right in the heart of the flea market, complete with a giant Ferris wheel and giveaways. And to find the flea market vendors and antique dealers, head to Boulevard Louis XIV, Boulevard de la Liberté, Avenue du Président-Kennedy, and the Esplanade area.
Throughout the weekend, several events will complement the large flea market, including a sale of used bicycles at Place de la Nouvelle-Aventure, a children’s market at Gare Saint-Sauveur, and a carnival on the Champ-de-Mars esplanade. Other establishments, such as Brasserie Campion and the Hôtel Babel, will prepare special menus for the occasion or simply highlight Lille’s heritage during this special weekend.

There’s another tradition that’s an integral part of the weekend: mussels and fries. Official figures give a sense of the scale of the phenomenon, with approximately 500 metric tons of mussels and 30 metric tons of fries consumed during the Braderie. In fact, restaurants traditionally pile up the mussel shells in front of their establishments, adding to the weekend’s unique atmosphere.
So, whether you’re planning a short weekend getaway or just a day trip from the capital, the Braderie de Lille promises to be one of the most unique outings to enjoy as the school year begins!
