But less than an hour from the capital, another castle—just as impressive—has been offering a nighttime experience for over 40 years that’s at least as magical, and surprisingly less crowded. Head to Vaux-le-Vicomte, the estate that literally inspired Versailles.
The castle that made Louis XIV jealous
Here’s a little anecdote worth its weight in gold: Louis XIV was so impressed (and jealous) by the splendor of Nicolas Fouquet’s château that he directly asked his architects to draw inspiration from it when building Versailles. It must be said that Vaux-le-Vicomte, a 17th-century masterpiece located in Maincy, in the Seine-et-Marne department, brought together for the first time the trio that would become legendary: the architect Louis Le Vau, the painter Charles Le Brun, and the landscape architect André Le Nôtre. This collaboration laid the foundation for the Louis XIV style, blending architecture, interior design, and the French formal garden.
Since 1980, the château has had the honor of being the very first in France to offer candlelit night tours—a concept that has since become a true benchmark for living heritage in the Île-de-France region.

2,000 candles, water features, and fireworks: a truly magical experience
Every Saturday evening, through September 26, 2026, the château and its 33 hectares of French gardens are illuminated by the flickering glow of 2,000 candles. Starting at 5:30 p.m., visitors stroll in soft lighting through Nicolas Fouquet’s private apartments and the state rooms, before continuing their walk through the gardens as night falls.
But the program doesn’t stop there: water features come to life in the ponds at dusk, an immersive projection is displayed on the ceiling of the Grand Salon, and the evening concludes with a gold-and-silver fireworks display, narrated by the voiceof André Dussollier. New this year: white, luminous stilt walkers wander through the garden paths, creating an even more dreamlike experience.
An evening combining a romantic dinner and a champagne bar at Les Charmilles
For those who love a complete experience, the pop-up restaurant Les Charmilles offers a refined dinner every Saturday evening starting at 7 p.m., with a breathtaking view of the illuminated château. A champagne bar, macarons, a picnic on the grass, or a supervised swim in the Marne: everything you need to turn this evening into a true romantic getaway, far from the hustle and bustle of Paris.
