Immense limestone cliffs, a turquoise river, and panoramic views stretching as far as the eye can see: we’re not in the Canadian Rockies or an American national park, but in the south of France. The Verdon Gorge, carved out over millions of years by the river of the same name, is now Europe’s largest canyon.
One of the most spectacular places in Europe
To reach the Verdon, travelers often take the road, and as they climb higher, the canyon reveals its full grandeur. The Route des Crêtes, about twenty kilometers long, features numerous overlooks suspended above the abyss.
Below, it’s the water that catches everyone’s eye. Fed by mountain springs, the Verdon owes its distinctive color to suspended minerals and the purity of its water. Renting a canoe, a paddleboard, or a small electric boat allows you to leisurely explore the canyon from Lake Sainte-Croix.
Some visitors come here to hike the famous Blanc-Martel Trail, while others prefer to stop in the villages overlooking the canyon. Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, often ranked among the most beautiful villages in France, is worth the detour on its own, with its cobblestone streets, pottery workshops, and a star suspended between two cliffs. Further on, Aiguines overlooks Lake Sainte-Croix from its promontory, offering one of the most photographed panoramas in the region.
Perhaps what is most surprising is the diversity of landscapes concentrated within such a small area. In just a few kilometers, you go from a plateau covered in lavender to an oak forest, from a lakeside beach to sheer cliffs.
The Verdon Gorges may be among France’s most famous natural sites, and photos give a sense of the colors, but never of the scale. It is only when standing face-to-face with the cliffs that one truly grasps the dimensions of the canyon, some sections of which are nearly 1, 500 meters wide.
A spectacular canyon, tropical-looking lakes, Provençal villages, scenic roads, and nature everywhere you look: few places in Europe bring together so many different landscapes within a single region. This is undoubtedly why, despite its fame, the Verdon continues to leave the same lasting impression on those discovering it for the first time!
