When we talk about Paleolithic caves, many people rightly think of the Lascaux caves. But did you know that just 2.5 hours from Paris there is a spectacular cave? Located in the Yonne department, it houses a huge lake surrounded by stalactites and stalagmites. And this natural site reopens next April!
One of the oldest decorated prehistoric caves in the world near Paris
The caves of Arcy-sur-Cure in the Yonne department are the result of nature’s slow work. Having provided shelter for humans since the Middle Paleolithic period, they still contain traces left behind by humans throughout the ages: tools, jewelry, remains of dwellings, and even works of art.
Rare paintings, carefully preserved, depict the wildlife of the Cro-Magnon era, such as mammoths, but also rarer species from the Paleolithic period: birds, fish, etc. In all, around sixty animals are featured, represented in a reddish paint very characteristic of the period.

But it’s not just the prehistoric art that impresses. Along a 900-meter route, a whole mysterious and fascinating underground world awaits you. The site, consisting of several limestone caves, contains impressive stalactites and stalagmites. Sculpted by water and time, this place is simply fascinating in its beauty. The Neanderthal cave seems to almost sparkle under the dim glow of the lamps, making the spectacle even more magical.
Open from April 4 to November 4, the caves can be visited every day except Wednesdays and during school holidays. A fabulous place, straight out of a dream, to be visited at least once!
