Just 20 minutes from Paris by RER, the Yerres Valley is one of those little-known corners of Île-de-France that is full of surprises. As soon as you step off the train, you can enjoy the river winding its way through the trees, the quiet paths and the walks that stretch along the water’s edge. In short, it’s the ideal setting for a spring hike far from the hustle and bustle of the capital.
A perfect hike for a spring getaway near Paris
The easiest starting point is Montgeron-Crosne station on RER line D. A few minutes’ walk takes you to the riverbank and the first paths that run alongside the water. The walk begins gently, under the trees, in an almost rural atmosphere. The banks are well maintained, allowing you to walk peacefully while staying close to the river.
As you walk, the landscape changes: some sections pass through shady undergrowth, while others open up onto meadows or small clearings. The river remains visible throughout, sometimes wide and calm, sometimes more discreet among the reeds.
Beyond its beauty, the Yerres Valley is also an area steeped in history. Several old mills still line the river, a reminder of the activity that once animated these banks. The small footbridges and bridges also add charm to the route, especially when the path crosses the different branches of the river.
As you continue towards Yerres, the walk takes on a more cultural dimension. This is where you will find the Maison Caillebotte, an estate that belonged to the family of the eponymous Impressionist painter. The site, now open to the public, includes a large house, a park, and gardens that border the river. The painter created several of his works here, inspired by the landscapes of the valley.
The hike can easily be extended to Brunoy, still following the banks of the Yerres. The entire walk is about ten kilometers long, but you can adapt the distance to suit your preferences. The RER D stations located along the valley make it easy to return to Paris at various points along the route.
What makes this walk particularly enjoyable is the sense of calm that quickly sets in and lasts throughout the outing. In addition to the atmosphere, it’s worth noting that this hike is fairly accessible and does not present any particular difficulties. So, for a green and exotic walk without leaving the Île-de-France region, the banks of the Yerres remain a safe bet.
