The origins of the carnival date back to the 17th century. At that time, shipowners would offer a large meal to sailors before they left for fishing trips to Iceland, which could last several months. These festive occasions gradually evolved into a collective celebration, rooted in local identity.

The highlight of the carnival is the atmosphere and the “quirky” and good-natured side of the festival. The costumes are deliberately zany, sometimes cobbled together at the last minute. Colorful wigs, makeup, fishermen’s raincoats, nets, novelty glasses, and decorated umbrellas make up the decor.
