“Butterbeer” or “bière au beurre” (both spellings are correct) is an emblematic element of the Harry Potter imagination. In the taverns that populate Chemin de Traverse and the Cauldron, it’s simple: it’s everywhere. This magical beverage is almost a character in its own right! If you don’t have the opportunity to taste it at Warner Bros. studios in London or at the Jardin des Plantes in Montauban during the Forbidden Forest Experience, the editors of Paris Secret have the secret recipe for this veritable icon of the Harry Potter saga. Muggles, don’t thank us and try it out!
Butterbeer ingredients
For a large mug of butterbeer:
- 33 cl alcoholic or non-alcoholic beer
- 1 teaspoon brown sugar
- 1 large knob butter
- whipped cream (or 20cl single cream with a pinch of sugar)
- spices of your choice (ginger, powdered cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg…)
The secret recipe step by step
First, we prepare the base of the recipe. Start by melting the butter in a saucepan over a very low heat, until it forms a smooth cream. Next, add the brown sugar to the butter and mix until smooth.
Then add the spices, taking care not to create lumps. To do this, stir vigorously without stopping. In another container, bring the beer to the boil and add it directly to the previous mixture.
Now it’s time to serve our butter beer. Be careful, the assembly is important! First of all, it must be served piping hot. Pour the mixture into mugs and finish with a dollop of whipped cream (or liquid cream whipped with a pinch of sugar).
And for those with a sweet tooth, you can enjoy it with a nice scoop of vanilla or coffee ice cream. And that’s all there is left for Potterheads to enjoy!
