In the Val-d’Oise, about thirty kilometers from Paris, the Abbey of Maubuisson offers an unexpected interlude between medieval history and contemporary creation. Located in Saint-Ouen-l’Aumône, this former royal Cistercian abbey is now a vast cultural and natural estate, open to all.
A Francilian abbey transformed into an art center
The abbey was founded in 1236 by Blanche of Castile, Queen of France and mother of Saint Louis. At the time, she wanted to create a women’s monastery according to the Cistercian rule, in a secluded location but close to the capital. Maubuisson quickly became an important establishment, frequented by the nobility and supported by the royal court. Several princesses entered the convent there, and the site acquired a privileged status in the kingdom.
Over the centuries, the abbey experienced periods of prosperity followed by phases of decline. Like many religious establishments, it was profoundly affected by the French Revolution. The buildings were sold as national property and converted for various uses, particularly agricultural. Some of the buildings disappeared, but several major elements were preserved.
Today, the estate retains a very special atmosphere. Visitors can explore the nuns’ hall, a vast Gothic space with soaring vaults, as well as the remains of the cloister and the former convent buildings. The sober and elegant Cistercian architecture gives the place a peaceful and almost timeless character.

Since the 1980s, the abbey has been renovated and transformed into a contemporary art center. It now hosts exhibitions, installations, and artistic projects that interact with the historic spaces. This coexistence of medieval heritage and contemporary creation is one of the site’s unique features.
The park surrounding the buildings covers several hectares. Lawns, ancient trees, and shaded paths invite visitors to take a stroll. The atmosphere is calm, almost intimate, far from the hustle and bustle of Paris. Many visitors come simply to enjoy the garden, read on the grass, or walk among the ancient stone walls.
With its royal history, Gothic spaces, and wooded park, Maubuisson Abbey offers a simple and exotic cultural getaway on the outskirts of the capital. A discreet but history-filled place, perfect for a different kind of outing in Île-de-France.
