On the Normandy coast, between Cabourg and Villers-sur-Mer, Houlgate embodies discreet charm. Less well known than some of its neighbors, this seaside resort nevertheless offers everything you would expect from a seaside getaway: a large sandy beach, a pretty seafront and a peaceful atmosphere, ideal for escaping the capital for a weekend.
A little-known gem in Normandy
Houlgate developed in the 19th century, at a time when sea bathing was becoming fashionable. The resort attracted a wealthy Parisian clientele, who came to enjoy the sea air and long walks on the beach. The town has retained a remarkable architectural heritage from this period. The streets near the seafront are lined with Belle Époque villas with colorful facades, fanciful turrets, and wooden balconies.
The beach remains one of Houlgate’s main attractions. Wide, well-maintained and directly accessible from the center, it stretches for several kilometers. At low tide, the horizon opens up to reveal a vast expanse of sand, perfect for long walks along the water’s edge. At the far end of the beach, the Vaches Noires cliffs offer a very different landscape. These clay formations, with their almost lunar shapes, are known for their marine fossils. The site attracts geology enthusiasts and curious walkers, who come to observe these formations unique in Normandy.
The town center, which is pleasant to explore on foot, is home to cafés, restaurants, and small shops. The atmosphere remains family-friendly and relaxed, far from the hustle and bustle of some of the more popular resorts. The terraces come alive especially on sunny days, when visitors come to enjoy the Normandy sunshine and seafood.
Houlgate is ideal for a day trip or a full weekend. From Paris, it takes about two and a half hours to reach the resort by train or car. Once there, everything is easily accessible on foot or by bike, between the beach, the town center, and the walking trails.
With its elegant villas, unspoiled coastline, and tranquil atmosphere, Houlgate is an attractive alternative to the more famous destinations on the Normandy coast. It’s a simple and refreshing getaway, perfect for breathing in the sea air without straying too far from Paris.
