The Sri Manicka Vinayakar Alayam Hindu temple, the largest in France, will host the Ganesh Festival in Paris on August 30, 2026 . Every year, this religious celebration transforms the streets of the La Chapelle neighborhood, in the 18th arrondissement, into a parade bursting with colors, sounds, and rituals.
The Ganesh Festival, the most colorful celebration of the year
The Ganesh Festival commemorates the birth of Lord Ganesh, son of the deities Shiva and Parvati. A central figure in the Hindu tradition, this elephant-headed god symbolizes love, knowledge, and the origin of the world. The day begins with religious ceremonies at the temple before the procession sets off through the surrounding streets.
You’ll see a float about five meters tall, ablaze with color and carrying the statue of Ganesh through the neighborhood. Entirely covered in red and white fabrics, it is adorned with garlands, fresh flowers, bunches of bananas, coconuts, and areca palm leaves.
Along the entire route, coconuts are ritually smashed. These coconuts represent the illusion of the world, the flesh of the fruit represents individual karma, and the water represents the human ego. Hundreds of coconuts are thus smashed on the pavement as the float passes by. Blessed offerings, treats, and cold drinks are also distributed to participants.
Every year, the Ganesh Festival brings together thousands of members of the Hindu community from all over France, as well as a large crowd of curious Parisians. The next festival is scheduled for August 30, 2026, in the La Chapelle neighborhood, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
