Let’s face it, with temperatures dropping and the sun declining faster, spirits can quickly be dampened. So, to bring a little sunshine into your everyday life, you can put some flowers outside! Some plants are particularly resistant to frost and extreme temperature drops. Here are some of our favorites to brighten up your Parisian exterior (and I promise, they’re easy to care for).
1 – Naples Cyclamen, delicate and frost-resistant
This pretty plant isn’t as delicate as it looks. In fact, this force of nature can withstand extreme sub-zero temperatures. As low as -15°! Although it likes a sunny spot, it also appreciates semi-shaded locations. Its strong point lies in its maintenance, which doesn ‘t require much effort on your part: a little water once a week, and that’s it (or almost it). In fact, it’s just as at home in your apartment!
2 – Heather, the frost-resistant outdoor plant par excellence
This pretty plant is simply incredible. It’s so easy to grow, there’s no risk of unpleasant surprises! Heather resists everything : heat, frost, snow… Everything except one thing: too much water! Apart from that, the plant will flourish on your balcony as long as light is present.
3 -Echinacea, a sublime winter flower
Its name doesn’t do justice to its beauty, but trust us, you’re going to love this winter flower. Loved by butterflies and bees, it’s highly resistant to the cold… down to -30°C! What’s more, it won’t suffer from your lack of watering!
4 – Rosemary, one of the best-known frost-resistant outdoor plants
Rosemary is loved for its flavors in cooking, but it’s also a hardy plant that produces beautiful flowers. Easy to preserve, it’s not afraid of the cold or the heat! It’s only below -12°C that it’s likely to get a bit sore… So there’s plenty of room for improvement!
5 – Lavender, a fragrant and robust flower
It smells of the South, yet lavender is found just about everywhere in France. As delicate as it may seem, it can cope with anything: heatwaves, cold… down to -20°C. And all without disturbing its flowering (no less!). It’s a plant that’s sure to brighten up your balcony, and one that’s extremely frost-resistant!
6 – The daylily, one of the prettiest frost-resistant outdoor plants
The name of this plant may sound a little strange to your ears, but remember it well! The daylily is a wonder of nature, producing large, brightly colored flowers. These flowers last only a day, but multiply very easily, so you’ll be able to admire them often, especially from June to August. In winter, this perennial flower can withstand sub-zero temperatures without any problems (down to -20°c).
7 – Peonies, the star of chic bouquets
While we’re used to seeing these large flowers bloom in bouquets from our favorite florists, peonies can also be planted in window boxes. This hardy perennial doesn’t bloom in winter, but it does make it through the cold and sub-zero temperatures without batting an eyelid! In spring, it’s here that the magic happens: you’ll see its magnificent, delicately scented flowers in full bloom! But beware: peonies hate sun and heat. Think about this before choosing a location!
