Perched on a rocky promontory above the river estuary, Talmont-sur-Gironde is one of those villages that seem frozen in time. Located in Charente-Maritime, a few kilometers from Royan, it attracts visitors with its unique setting between land, sea, and heritage. An ideal destination for a weekend getaway away from the hustle and bustle.
A village ranked among the most beautiful in France
In terms of setting, the village is entirely surrounded by ramparts, a legacy of its medieval past. Founded in the 13th century by Edward I of England, Talmont was then a fortified bastide designed to control the estuary. Even today, the grid-like street layout and the ancient fortifications bear witness to this history.

The village center is easy to explore on foot: the narrow streets, lined with low, whitewashed houses, are adorned with hollyhocks in season. The atmosphere is simple, peaceful, almost timeless. You wander without a specific route, passing small artisan shops, galleries, and viewpoints overlooking the water.
You can’t miss the Church of Sainte-Radegonde, the village’s symbol. Built in the 12th century in the Saintonge Romanesque style, it stands right on the edge of the cliff. Its impressive location, facing the estuary, makes it one of the most photographed landmarks in the region. The contrast between the light-colored stone and the seascape works particularly well, especially at the end of the day.

All around, the ramparts offer several panoramic views. On one side, the estuary stretches as far as the eye can see. On the other, the carrelets—those fishing huts on stilts typical of the region—dot the landscape. Together, they give the stroll a leisurely pace, between heritage and the maritime horizon.
Nearby, the cliffs and coastal paths offer opportunities to walk along the estuary. Just a few minutes away, the beaches of the Atlantic coast round out the outing, particularly around Meschers-sur-Gironde or Royan. The area is also known for its vineyards and small ports.
Ranked among the most beautiful villages in France, Talmont-sur-Gironde remains relatively quiet outside of peak season. A perfect destination to get some fresh air, enjoy the coastline, and discover a village whose charm remains intact, just a few hours from Paris.
