This is the photo exhibition we recommend to street photography fans. Until mid-March, Galerie Rouge invites you to take a stroll through the American streets of the 50s and 70s, with striking shots by Garry Winogrand, Jill Freedman and Dave Heath!
American Street Photography, a plunge into American streets
With American Street Photography, Galerie Rouge, in the 4th arrondissement of Paris, sets its sights on American street photography! This event brings together black & white works by some of the greatest artists of this contemporary photography movement. Street photography, or street photography in general, will be presented through the distinct eyes of six American artists.
From the 50s to the 70s, Danny Lyon, Joseph Sterling, Louis Faurer, Dave Heath, Jill Freedman and Garry Winogrand surveyed America, its cities and public places, offering their visions of a country and its society in the throes of change!
A country and a society under scrutiny in
Through the series of photographs on show until mid-March, American Street Photography offers both an exploration of America’s streets and a glimpse into the everyday life of Americans and their society. Behind these unstaged photos of anonymous people, behind each banal scene lies a piece of American history.

These photographers, each with their own approach, have captured the post-World War II United States, with its conflict in Vietnam, the death of Kennedy and the struggle for civil rights. They are sometimes neutral witnesses to the street scenes played out before their eyes, sometimes more sensitive revelators of the successes and dysfunctions of a nation in upheaval from 1950 to 1970!
