New historical exhibition alert! While the Sun King is currently being honoredin a special exhibition under the nave of the Grand Palais, Sofia Coppola’s version of Marie Antoinette will soon be on display in Versailles. Twenty years later, the film Marie Antoinette hasn’t aged a bit.

2006. Sofia Coppola caused a stir with the release of the film Marie Antoinette, starring the coldly beautiful Kristen Dunst. That year, the film divided critics and audiences alike due to its bias: an intimate portrait of the young queen, which was criticized for glossing over the political and historical aspects of her reign.
Despite the disapproval of some film lovers, the film became a cult classic. So much so that, 20 years later, an exhibition was dedicated to the film in the sumptuous setting of Versailles and its gilded interiors.
Sofia Coppola’s rock ‘n’ roll Marie Antoinette in an offbeat biopic

Rebellious, stylish, scandalous, touching… This is the first time Marie Antoinette has been portrayed in this way, through the eyes of Sofia Coppola. We discover the life, rather than the history, of the Austrian-born queen, the neglected wife of Louis XVI. A young woman discovering the codes of the court, its vices and its frivolous world. But also a young queen who broke the codes of her time, finding escape through the pleasures of the flesh. From lavish parties to excess, Sofia Coppola’s rebellious Marie Antoinette emancipates herself and desperately tries to free herself from the shackles in which she feels imprisoned.
Viewers are also captivated by the costumes designed by Milena Canonero, a four-time Oscar winner. Puffy dresses, sparkling jewelry, hairstyles reminiscent of wedding cakes… but also pastel shades, diaphanous and iridescent fabrics. With candy-colored hues and ceremonial attire, the costume designer of Marie Antoinette unveils one of the richest wardrobes in the history of cinema.
In 2026, a major exhibition at the Petit Trianon in Versailles

And in September 2026, to mark the 20th anniversary of Sofia Coppola’s film Marie Antoinette, the Petit Trianon will lift the veil on the film’s exceptional wardrobe. Here, original costumes by Milena Canonero will be on display, along with props from the film. This exhibition promises to be exceptional, inviting visitors behind the scenes of filmmaking. Fascinating storyboards, annotated scripts, set sketches, and photographs from the set will be on display.
To complete the experience, exclusive screenings will give visitors the opportunity to watch filmed sequences… in the very rooms where they were made at the time. This will add an even more immersive dimension to this exhibition combining history and the seventh art.
