It’s a fact: the Paris 2024 Olympics are not good news for everyone. Some people are gnashing their teeth at the approach of the Games and are already imagining the worst in terms of traffic and public transport. And the organizers of certain events may also feel penalized. The cause: major Parisian events cancelled and venues simply closed. But what events have been cancelled or postponed, and what venues are closed because of the Paris 2024 Olympics? Let’s take stock together.
Events cancelled (and venues closed) in Paris due to the Paris 2024 Olympics
The 2024 edition of La Villette open-air cinema is cancelled!
Sad news for lovers of the 7th art! This year, sports will be a priority. Yes, this summer the Prairie du Triangle won’t be hosting the traditional open-air cinema so eagerly awaited by Parisians. If the 34th edition of the open-air cinema at La Villette is cancelled due to the Olympic Games, the event will be held again in July/August 2025!
No Tuileries funfair this summer because of the Paris 2024 Olympics?
Visit Fête Foraine des Tuileries is one of Paris’s must-see summer events. But this year, there’s a good chance the big event won’t take place. Traditionally located in the Tuileries Gardens, the iconic funfair was to be relocated to the Bois de Boulogne. The only problem is that a few days ago, the Paris city council rejected the proposed move. For the time being, the Tuileries funfair is without a home. With no alternative solution or support, there’s every reason to believe that it will eventually be cancelled. To be continued…
The quays of the Seine will be closed because of the Olympics
Ah the quays of the Seine… With the slightest ray of sunshine, they’re the HQ of Parisians! But this year -due to the Paris 2024 Olympics- the quays of the Seine will be off-limits. This measure will take effect from mid-June. Will we be able to put behind us our days lounging in the sun and our aperitif evenings with friends? Nothing is less certain.
Among the events cancelled because of the Olympics: the Lollapalooza Festival
Here’s a piece of news that’s likely to disappoint festival-goers. In 2024, there will be no edition of Lollapalooza in Paris. The cause? Logistical, administrative and security constraints” but not only. The Paris 2024 Olympic Games also played a role in the cancellation. A reduced capacity of 7,000 was imposed on the organizers. For all these reasons, Lollapalooza has decided to postpone its festival until summer 2025.
