With over 2.5 million visitors every year, this enchanting Christmas market is one of the most popular in Europe. Founded almost 600 years ago, it is not only one of the oldest in the world, but also one of the most impressive events of its kind. With 215 stands, a pyramid and a giant Christmas tree, it’s truly the Christmas event of superlatives. The icing on the cake is that it can be reached in less than 2 hours by air from Paris.
A magical Christmas market 1h40 from Paris
Every winter, in the heart of Dresden’s Old Town, the Striezelmarkt is the place to be. Considered one of Europe’s oldest Christmas markets, this veritable institution held its first edition in 1434! Since then, it has attracted visitors from all over the world every year to experience an authentic, tradition-focused Christmas.
For 2025, Altmarkt Square is once again filled with wooden chalets, handcrafted decorations and monumental structures. Among them, the immense Christmas pyramid, several meters high, is one of the symbols of the Striezelmarkt. The 20-metre-high Christmas tree is also impossible to miss. Surrounding it, the 215 stalls are a succession of carved wooden toys, smoking figurines (the famous Räuchermännchen), luminous arches, lace objects, tree ornaments and small traditional creations from the mining crafts of the Ore Mountains.
The selection stands out for its quality and authenticity, making the market a true showcase for Saxon craftsmanship. The Striezelmarkt takes its name from Striezel, the former name of Stollen, the famous German Christmas cake. It’s impossible to walk through the market without coming across the enormous fruity sugar loaves, sold whole or in slices, sometimes even shaped into spectacular forms for the Stollenfest parade. The market then becomes a party within a party, with bakers parading a giant 3-tonne Stollen, shared with everyone.
And when it comes to gourmet delights, the comforting atmosphere typical of German markets is the order of the day. Roasted almonds, Lebkuchen, grilled bratwursts and mulled wine are all on offer. You’ll also come across the famous baked apples, thick pancakes, filled breads and other winter specialties to enjoy as you walk. Worth noting
When night falls, Altmarkt Square is transformed. The baroque facades light up, the arches sparkle and the atmosphere changes completely. But just a stone’s throw from the Striezelmarkt, other markets complete the visit: the medieval market near the Frauenkirche, the Stallhof craftsmen’s market or the more alternative Neustadt market.
In short, there’s every reason to discover this absolutely magical city. It’s also the perfect opportunity to get off the beaten track and discover one of Europe’s most impressive Christmas markets.
