Genealogy site Geneanet launched a platform called Mémoire des lieux in January, unaware that it would become one of our favorite online resources of confinement. While it’s no longer possible to explore the streets of Paris on foot for the time being, there’s nothing to stop you from doing so from the comfort of your own home.
With Geneanet’s interactive map, you can discover the history behind the names of the capital’s streets, travel back in time to admire the buildings of yesteryear and the stores and restaurants that have disappeared, or find all the commemorative plaques in Paris. Did you know that the movie Ratatouille was inspired by a real-life Parisian rat catcher?
World War II resistance fighters, painters, writers, French and international artists, politicians, kings… So many personalities who have left their mark on the history of Paris, from near and far, to discover on the Mémoire des lieux app!
