Dinant, a Belgian town nestled between a cliff and a river
You can’t miss the Notre-Dame Collegiate Church, a true symbol of Dinant. Nestled at the foot of the cliff, it seems to be protected by the rock towering above it. Just behind it, the citadel has watched over the valley for centuries. The more adventurous can climb the 408 steps leading up to it, while others prefer to reach the heights more leisurely to enjoy the panoramic view.
The Charles-de-Gaulle Bridge adds a much more unexpected touch to the stroll. Large, colorful saxophones there pay homage to Adolphe Sax, the inventor of the famous instrument, who was born in Dinant in 1814. In this town where music is part of the scenery, his name can be found everywhere: on a street, in front of a house-museum, in shop windows, and even along the riverbanks.
A getaway along the river
In Dinant, the best way to explore the area is undoubtedly to take the time to stroll along the Meuse. From the riverbanks, the town unfolds like a postcard: the houses along the water’s edge, the collegiate church in the center, the citadel at the top, and the cliffs in the background. You can also hop on a short cruise to see the town from the river and enjoy a different perspective on its facades.
Surrounding the town, the Rocher Bayard—an impressive split rock formation by the roadside—offers one of the area’s most famous sights. A little further on, nature lovers can kayak down the Lesse River, explore the landscapes of the Belgian Ardennes, or simply sit down at a sidewalk café to sample a local specialty. The “couque de Dinant,” a very hard honey cookie, is one of those local delicacies you can enjoy right there.
