Cyclone Chido, which hit Mayotte last Saturday, is the most powerful cyclone ever recorded in the region since 1950 ! Since then, the Mahorais have been trying to rebuild their island, but they need help. Here’s how you can support them from Paris.
Cyclone in Mayotte: how to donate safely?
Last Saturday’s devastating cyclone left a deep imprint on the island. The most vulnerable homes, particularly those in shantytowns, were completely destroyed. Schools, the main police station and the island’s only hospital were severely damaged.
A humanitarian emergency
Cyclone Chido was both destructive and deadly, sweeping away hundreds and possibly thousands of victims, according to the island’s prefect. Those affected must find solutions to protect their homes and devastated neighborhoods, but the resources available – whether human, material or financial – remain woefully inadequate.
In response to the emergency, dozens of solidarity funds have been launched to help the island’s inhabitants, some of whom have lost everything.
How are associations intervening on site?
Organizations such as the Mayotte Red Cross, Secours Populaire and Protection Civile were quick to mobilize. They are providing food, medical supplies and building materials, while playing an active role in clearing up and clearing blocked roads. The foundation Emergency Architects plays a key role in providing concrete and rapid solutions to disaster victims. It provides protective tarpaulins, essential materials for temporarily covering affected homes. Architects (from Réunion and elsewhere) are also mobilized on site to contribute their expertise.
Why is every donation crucial?
Of Mayotte’s official population of 320,000, almost 75% live below the poverty line. This makes the impact of the disaster all the more dramatic. Every donation, whatever the amount, contributes to improving the living conditions of the victims and restoring hope to a population that has been deeply affected.
