A recently published report by the Cour des Comptes revealed the urgent need for the Paris Opera to carry out work on its two main Parisian sites. A major challenge for the institution, which would then have to close the doors of Garnier and Bastille for an extended period. The two theaters are expected to close their doors alternately, for a period of two years each.
Urgent work and closure for the Paris opera houses
On Thursday October 24, the Cour des Comptes published a report scrutinizing the management of the Paris Opera’s finances. And while some positive aspects were highlighted, notably in terms of ballet revenues, major challenges lie ahead for the institution. Indeed, the “advanced ageing” of the structures concerns and urgent work will have to be undertaken to safeguard the buildings.
Work costing 2 million euros is likely to be carried out from 2027 onwards. This will involve roofing, stage machinery, the pit and the stage frame. We can therefore expect work to start in 3 years’ time, alternating between the buildings so that either Garnier or Bastille remains accessible to the public while the other is closed.
