Just 1h45 from Paris by plane, a Christmas market like no other lights up this European capital every year. Under a huge Christmas tree, but also and above all at the foot of an imposing Gothic church, dozens of chalets are set up where you can find a thousand culinary and craft treasures. This year, the Prague Christmas Market returns from November 29 to January 8!
The most authentic Christmas market in Europe
Every winter, Old Town Square in the historic heart of Prague becomes the setting for a spectacle that seems to come straight out of a fairy tale. As the 2025 edition of the Christmas market gets underway at the end of November, the baroque facades will be decked out in lights, the astronomical clock will sparkle softly and the large fir tree, selected each year, will dominate the square like a centerpiece.
The atmosphere is created by the chalets set up around the tree. Raw wood, red garlands, the smell of cinnamon and warm bread: total immersion. The stands feature traditional Czech decorations, blown glass and handmade candles, as well as wooden toys reminiscent of the markets of yesteryear. The artisans also often work on site, adding a touch of authenticity to the stroll.
It’s impossible to talk about the market without mentioning its delicacies. Spiced mulled wine can be smelled from several meters away, klobása (grilled sausages) crackle on the plates and trdelník cakes turn slowly over the embers. In the center of the square, a stage hosts daily concerts and choral groups, providing a little entertainment.
The market is also distinguished by its natural setting. Every corner of the square offers a different panorama: the towers of the Church of Our Lady of Týn, the pastel facades and the narrow streets that lead off. To fully enjoy the experience, it’s best to get there early in the morning or just before sunset. The crowds arrive quickly, especially at weekends, but the charm remains intact.
But there’s more to Prague than just this market. Just a stone’s throw away, Wenceslas Square opens its market in a more urban, livelier setting, also from November 29 to January 6. Other places offer quieter alternatives: Republic Square, Peace Square and Na Kampě, on the banks of the river, are all secondary markets where you can stroll away from the crowds, bargain for handicrafts and enjoy a moment of peace and quiet.
For 2025, everything points to an edition as magical as its predecessors, perhaps even more so. An ideal getaway to experience a true Central European Christmas, just 1h45 away by air.
