For one of Europe’s most enchanting Christmas markets, head north to discover this colorful capital. The program includes several markets in the heart of the city, entertainment and, above all, the very best in Nordic gastronomy and crafts. All less than a 2-hour flight from Paris!
The Nordic capital turns into a movie set for its Christmas market
As Copenhagen gently welcomes in winter, the Danish capital gradually becomes immersed in a warm atmosphere that permeates its streets, canals and historic gardens. In November, the first decorations go up, heralding the return of the city’s most emblematic Christmas market, in Tivoli Gardens.
From the moment they enter the gardens, visitors are enveloped by thousands of tiny lights hanging from the trees, colorful facades and the scent of spices wafting through the air. The chalets follow one another along the park’s paths, offering Nordic crafts, traditional decorations, wooden creations, knitwear, scented candles and a whole range of little gift ideas to put under the tree. The decor changes every year, but the 2025 edition once again focuses on the Scandinavian atmosphere, with lanterns and red and gold huts.
It’s impossible to leave without sampling Danish specialties. Gløgg, the Danish cousin of mulled wine, is eaten cooked with red wine, almonds, raisins and sometimes a dash of aquavit. Stalls also sell traditional æbleskiver, small, round, soft pastries served with powdered sugar and jam. Steaming sausages, artisanal cheeses and ginger cookies are a reminder of winter from the very first bite.
The Tivoli market is not limited to the chalets. The merry-go-rounds continue to spin and the illuminations sparkle every evening. In the evening, everything is transformed: garlands and facades light up, and the park takes on the air of a movie set.
To complete the visit, Copenhagen offers several other markets in the historic center. The Nyhavn market, set along the canal, offers a typical stroll between colorful houses and cottages lined up along the quay. Further north, the Kongens Nytorv market offers an elegant setting, while the Christianshavn market attracts those who enjoy a more local, less touristy atmosphere.
For a Nordic getaway that’s easy to organize and full of charm, the 2025 edition of Copenhagen’s Christmas markets promises to be a must!
