Just a short train ride from the capital, this historic town is currently hosting a superb Christmas market spread across several squares in its center. Just 3 hours from Paris, it’s a chance to get away from the hustle and bustle, and enjoy the magic of the festive season in an underrated destination.
This Christmas market on the Rhine is one of the most charming in Europe.
To enjoy the magic, head for Basel, where every winter the facades of the historic center are lit up, the streets are adorned with garlands and the scent of spices wafts through the air. Here, the Christmas market is an integral part of the city’s identity, and has established itself as one of Switzerland’s finest, regularly cited as one of Europe’s must-sees. For the 2025 edition, the magic has been working once again since the end of November, attracting Swiss visitors and travelers from all over Europe.
Basel’s Christmas Market takes place at two major sites. On Barfüsserplatz, in the heart of the city, the chalets form a cosy village surrounded by historic buildings. A few minutes’ walk away, Münsterplatz offers an even more spectacular backdrop, dominated by the red sandstone Gothic cathedral. The contrast between illuminated stalls, decorated trees and monumental architecture gives this square a wild atmosphere after dark.
In the market aisles, you’ll discover a wide selection of handcrafted creations, often made in Switzerland or neighboring regions. Handmade Christmas decorations, carved wooden objects, candles, textiles, traditional toys and handcrafted jewelry: there’s something for everyone. In Basel, the emphasis is clearly on quality and authenticity, far from the overly touristy Christmas markets.
On the gastronomic front, local specialities can be sampled along the way, starting with the famous Läckerli, a typical Basel cookie with spices and honey. The stalls also offer grilled sausages, crispy röstis, melting cheeses and many comforting winter recipes. As for beverages, mulled wine is a must, available in classic or white versions, sometimes with local spices. Chocolate lovers will also find something to their liking, as the city is renowned for its expertise in this area.
The Basel Christmas market is not confined to the chalets, and the whole city is alive with the festive spirit. Shop windows are filled, shopping streets are illuminated and the season is punctuated by a variety of events. Choirs, concerts, children’s workshops and spectacular decorations all contribute to the family-friendly atmosphere.
Easily accessible from the capital, Basel is the perfect place to spend a few days in winter. The market is a pleasant place to walk around, and allows you to discover museums, the banks of the Rhine and the historic center all at the same time.
