Some castles bear witness to a tumultuous history, marked by successive transformations, periods of abandonment, and sometimes unexpected rescues. This is precisely the case for the Château de Paley in Seine-et-Marne , which has just been selected as one of the iconic sites for the 2026 Heritage Lottery, organized by the Mission Stéphane Bern.
Located in the small village of Paley, in the southern part of the department, the estate overlooks the Lunain Valley, about fifteen kilometers from Nemours. Far from the most popular tourist routes, the site nevertheless boasts a history dating back nearly nine centuries.
Originally, the castle was amedieval fortress built in the 12th century. At that time, it included walls, a dovecote, and several defensive features characteristic of the era. Its history, however, has been far from smooth sailing: the site was partially burned down in 1382 before being rebuilt after the Hundred Years’ War. Over the centuries, successive owners gradually transformed the old fortress to adapt it to the tastes of their time. The 18th and 19th centuries, in particular, brought significant alterations that gave the estate part of its current appearance.
What makes Paley particularly interesting today is precisely this layering of eras. Remnants of the old defensive system can still be found there — a surrounding wall, vaulted cellars, a dovecote , and several elements bearing witness to its medieval past—all integrated into more recent structures.
But behind this rich heritage lies a more fragile reality. Long uninhabited, the castle suffers from numerous structural issues: damaged roofs, weakened roof trusses, masonry problems, and the presence of dry rot are among the main challenges to be addressed. It is precisely to support its restoration that the site was selected by the Mission Patrimoine 2026.
The project goes far beyond a simple renovation. The owners wish to gradually open the estate more to the public and develop a genuine cultural program centered around the site. For several years now, artists have been hosted in residence there, and various events have been organized in partnership with local stakeholders. Ultimately, the château aims to become a venue that blends heritage, artistic creation, and new technologies.
