Just 2 hours by train from the capital and the Gare Saint-Lazare, sits a superb medieval château founded a thousand years ago. In Falaise, the eponymous castle, also known as Château Guillaume le Conquérant and listed as a historic monument, was the birthplace of the future King of England. Today, it’s a great idea for a getaway, as the estate can be visited all year round!
This perched medieval castle is over a thousand years old.
Always on the lookout for the most beautiful châteaux in France, we’ve previously reviewed Chenonceau, La Mothe-Chandeniers and, more recently, the incredible Castel Novel. Today, we’re off to Normandy to discover one of its finest treasures. Located between Caen and Argentan, this edifice combines architectural grandeur with a wealth of history.
From the top of its rocky spur, it overlooks the town of Falaise and the Noireau valley. This majestic château, perched 2 hours from Paris, is not only one of the most impressive medieval buildings in Normandy. It’s also a place steeped in history, the birthplace of the most famous Norman duke: William the Conqueror. An illegitimate son, he became King of England after the Battle of Hastings in 1066, marking one of the most decisive turning points in European history. This piece of history is recounted throughout the tour.
The site is spectacular. Three keeps, massive ramparts, dizzying heights… Founded in the 12th century on the foundations of William the Conqueror’s birthplace, the complex has been altered and restored over the centuries, but retains all its majesty. The view alone, from the heights of the site, is worth the detour. But what also makes the château so special is that the tour is conducted using a tablet, making the experience interactive!
What’s more, throughout the year, the château hosts a wide range of events. At the beginning of August, Falaise hosts the Médiévales festival, during which shows, markets and storytelling bring the town to life. All summer long, you can take part in workshops and activities. And finally, in September, the Journées du Patrimoine (Heritage Days ) offer free and exclusive tours.
