While Fontainebleau and Versailles are well-known, Écouen is much less so. Yet this castle perched on the heights of the Val-d’Oise is clearly one of the places worth visiting in Île-de-France. Located about thirty minutes from Paris, the Château d’Écouen impresses as much with its Renaissance architecture as with its surprisingly peaceful setting once you arrive.
A majestic castle 30 minutes from Paris
Built in the 16th century for Anne de Montmorency, a powerful confidant of Francis I and later Henry II, the château overlooks the entire French plain from its promontory. Upon arrival, the building’s scale immediately strikes the visitor. Grand sculpted facades, monumental courtyards, gardens, and Renaissance details give the site a far more majestic air than one might generally imagine at this distance from Paris.
But the château is more than just its architecture. Since the 1970s, it has housed the National Renaissance Museum, the only French museum entirely dedicated to this period. Inside, visitors can discover monumental tapestries, armor, ceramics, stained-glass windows, antique furniture, and works of art from all over Europe. Some rooms still feature spectacular decor, notably the painted ceilings and monumental fireplaces.
All around, the gardens and grounds of the château offer several unobstructed views of the surrounding area, with a rather striking contrast between this 16th-century architecture and the urban development visible in the distance. In spring and summer, the area remains particularly pleasant for taking your time after the visit.
Another advantage of the Château d’Écouen is precisely its more low-key atmosphere. Even on weekends, the atmosphere is often much calmer than at the major tourist sites in the Paris region. You can easily wander through the rooms, enjoy the grounds, and explore the estate without a constant crowd.
Surrounding the château, the Écouen Forest provides a perfect extension to the getaway. Several trails allow for a short walk through the woods before or after the visit, further reinforcing the sense of a break from Paris.
Accessible by train via Line H from Gare du Nord, followed by a short walk or bus ride, the Château d’Écouen is one of those easy day trips to organize without leaving the Paris region.
