Four large towers, a light-colored stone facade, and a reflecting pool that completely surrounds the building: the Château du Plessis-Bourré, located two hours from Paris, immediately gives the impression of a fortress straight out of a history book. Yet, behind its medieval appearance, the site hides a somewhat more complex history.
A little-known castle, perched on the water
Built at the end of the 15th century by Jean Bourré, treasurer to Louis XI, the castle stands precisely at a pivotal moment between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. As a result, it draws on elements from both eras. The moat, the access bridge, and the defensive features inherited from fortified castles are still present, but the complex also features a more elegant and open architecture.

Unlike some of the larger, heavily visited castles, Le Plessis-Bourré remains surrounded by nature and retains a fairly peaceful atmosphere. The moat reflects the light, trees surround the estate, and the views change completely depending on where you stand. In spring and early summer, the setting becomes particularly photogenic.
Inside, the castle has retained much of its original decor. The guard room is particularly striking with its painted coffered ceiling, considered one of the most remarkable examples of its kind from this period in France. Several rooms also feature furniture, tapestries, and architectural elements that are still very well preserved.

Le Plessis-Bourré also has a small connection to cinema. Its spectacular appearance has earned it a place in several film shoots over the decades. It can be seen notably in Jacques Demy’s *Peau d’Âne* as well as in certain historical adaptations and television productions.
Around the castle, the Anjou countryside makes it easy to extend your getaway. Angers is about fifteen minutes away and offers a perfect way to round out the day with its historic center or its imposing fortress. The region is also known for its vineyards and villages dotted along the Loire.
From Paris, it takes about 1.5 hours by TGV to Angers, followed by a 20-minute drive to reach the estate. Less well-known than the grand châteaux of the Loire Valley, Le Plessis-Bourré boasts spectacular scenery, a rich history, and a more intimate atmosphere, making it a wonderful getaway destination.
