Discover the magical Château de Breteuil
Architectural heritage, sumptuous gardens and cultural tales – that’s the triptych that sums up Château de Breteuil in a nutshell. On the historical side, the present château was built between the late 16th and early 17th centuries on the site of an ancient medieval fortress. Among its famous figures in the 18th century was Gabrielle-Émilie de Breteuil, a woman of science and Voltaire‘s companion. The estate also played an important diplomatic role in the 19th century, with landmark meetings such as that between Léon Gambetta and the future King Edward VII.
From fairy tales to literature and gardens
Charles Perrault, the famous author of 17th-century fairy tales, collaborated with Louis de Breteuil, who held the position of Controller General of Finances under Louis XIV. This professional and friendly relationship left a lasting imprint, which the Breteuil family chose to highlight in the château. Today, the château’s outbuildings are filled with small scenes and wax statues depicting the author’s most famous stories.
The estate is also renowned for its magnificent gardens. Whether in the French or English style, or in the form of labyrinths or tree walks, the greenery at Breteuil has pride of place, and it’s always a pleasure to stroll through these 75 hectares.
