It’s hard to imagine a more cinematic setting just 3 hours from Paris. At the entrance to Combourg, in Ille-et-Vilaine, a massive silhouette rises above the trees: tall granite towers, ramparts, and reflections in the water. Situated on the shores of Lake Tranquille, Combourg Castle is one of those places that draws visitors as much for its architecture as for the atmosphere that surrounds it.
A Breton estate that inspired Chateaubriand
From Paris, it takes about three hours by train to Rennes, followed by a thirty-minute drive or TER ride to reach this small Breton town. A distance that is ultimately quite short for a place that truly gives the impression of a change of scenery.

The castle’s history dates back to the Middle Ages: the fortress was built between the 12th and 15th centuries to guard this strategic part of Brittany. Its four large towers still dominate the landscape today, giving it that instantly recognizable appearance.
But if Combourg has become famous far beyond Brittany, it is mainly thanks to Chateaubriand. The writer spent part of his childhood there starting in 1777 and would later describe the château in his *Mémoires d’outre-tombe*. In particular, he recalls the long walks in the park, the melancholy of the place, and the famous ghost stories surrounding the estate. For indeed, the château also has its share of legend. For centuries, various tales have claimed that a mysterious black cat or the spirit of a former lord haunts the grounds.

Today, a tour allows visitors to explore part of the interiors, including furnished salons, the library, and several rooms associated with Chateaubriand. But the outdoor setting is undoubtedly what leaves the strongest impression. The park slopes down toward the lake and offers stunning views of the castle’s towers, especially at the end of the day when the light reflects off the water.
The center of Combourg is also worth a stroll. The old alleyways, stone houses, and small terraces easily extend the visit. Many people choose to spend the entire day there before continuing on to Saint-Malo or the Emerald Coast, located less than 40 minutes away.
Part medieval fortress, part romantic setting, and steeped in literary history, Combourg Castle possesses something quite rare. A spectacular place that easily makes you want to extend your getaway a little longer than planned.
