Less than an hour from Paris, there’s a Renaissance château that time has all but erased. Château d’Anet, built for the unforgettable Diane de Poitiers, mistress of King Henry II, still reveals its secrets to curious visitors: a chapel with bewitching stained glass windows, stones marked by love, power… and legend.
Diane de Poitiers and the castle of mysteries

The château once sparkled with sumptuous decorations: the portal bore Cellini’s famous “Nymph of Fontainebleau” relief , while the interior sparkled with enamel apostles and the statue of Diana the Huntress, now in the Louvre. Three buildings surrounded the courtyard of honor, but today only the left wing and chapel remain, revealing a Greek cross plan, a trompe-l’œil coffered cupola and stained glass windows by Charles Lorin that diffuse an almost unreal light, like a breath from the past.
Château d’Anet – vestiges, legends and visits

Today , the château remains in private ownership (the de Yturbe family since 1971), but the left wing and chapel are open to visitors ready to discover its secrets. Guided tours are available from February 1 to October 31, 2025 (every day except Tuesday, 2-6pm) and on weekends in November (2-5pm) , starting at €11.50.
To step through these doors is to walk in the footsteps of Diane de Poitiers, to feel the whispers of history, and to be carried away by the mystery of a château where time seems suspended, between love, power and legend.
