In the heart of the Burgundy vineyards, just a few minutes from Beaune, a château draws visitors for a reason quite different from its salons or gardens. In Savigny-lès-Beaune, this elegant historic residence houses a completely unexpected collection: seven museums dedicated to various mechanical and military passions, as well as a spectacular collection of over 100 fighter jets on display outdoors. A unique site in France, sometimes even described as the largest private collection of its kind in the world.
An impressive collection at the heart of a château
Behind the castle’s classical facades and amidst the vineyards, dozens of military aircraft appear in the grounds. Lined up on the lawns, nestled among the trees, or visible from the paths, these planes transform the visit into an extraordinary experience. Mirage, MiG, Fouga Magister, helicopters, and other iconic aircraft make up this impressive open-air museum.

The collection was built up over the years by Michel Pont, the estate’s owner and an enthusiast of industrial heritage. His ambition: to save significant machines from destruction and present them to the public in an accessible setting. As a result, the Château de Savigny has become a destination in its own right, at the crossroads of a historic monument and a museum park.
The aircraft are, however, only part of the visit, as the estate features a total of seven museums, each dedicated to a specific theme. Visitors can explore collections of Abarth motorcycles, race cars, vintage tractors, fire trucks, scale models, winemaking equipment, and machinery related to the world of motorcycling.

Dating in part from the 14th century and remodeled over time, the château retains its elegant charm with its towers, moat, and outbuildings. The tour thus alternates between classic Burgundian heritage and completely unexpected discoveries.
Located just a few kilometers from Beaune, the château fits easily into a weekend in Burgundy. After the visit, simply head to the wine cellars, wine-growing villages, or the Grand Cru routes to extend your getaway.
The Château de Savigny-lès-Beaune is one of those highly unusual destinations to discover in France. You expect to visit a château, but instead you discover a vast cabinet of mechanical curiosities right in the middle of the vineyards. Combining history, heritage, and hundreds of rare pieces, this is an outing off the beaten path.
