In the north of the capital, an incredible century-old restaurant has become one of the finest symbols of Art Nouveau in Paris. Today, in this “good, beautiful and inexpensive” institution, you can enjoy fine French gastronomy without breaking the bank, in keeping with the tradition of Parisian bouillons.
This Parisian bouillon is a true marvel of Art Nouveau
“Here, everything is beautiful, good and inexpensive. The words of Bouillon Julien ‘s founder still ring true today when describing this establishment. In the heart of rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis, crowds have been flocking to this listed spot since 1906. Today, the tradition is perpetuated and brasserie dishes continue to be served behind the restaurant’s beautiful stained-glass windows.
Inaugurated at the start of the 21st century, Bouillon Julien is the fruit of the work of several master craftsmen. From glassmaking and ceramics to cabinetmaking, founder Edouard Fournier called on the cream of the crop to decorate his restaurant. A century later, after years of highs and lows, a new chapter was written for the restaurant in 2018, when major renovation work was undertaken. Since then, this Art Nouveau haven has once again shone brightly, welcoming regulars and tourists on a daily basis.
As soon as you enter the restaurant, the spirit of the Belle-Époque, preserved in every detail, is immediately apparent. The large, beautifully patterned stained glass windows filter the light and create a very special atmosphere. From the feminine figures in the stained glass, the original mahogany bar and the incredible mosaic floor to the celadon-green walls, all the attributes of Art Nouveau are present. It’s more like a theater set than a real restaurant.
In the great tradition of Parisian bouillons, Chez Julien is a good place to eat, and for a good price. The food is simple, good and seasonal, just like in a good bistro. Mayo eggs, snails, trout rillettes: the starters are all tempting, and come in at just €5. Then, of course, there are the great classics such as aveyronnaise sausage, poultry supreme or homemade ratatouille, also at low prices, as well as the sweet corner with its delicacies to finish off.
All the ingredients for a good broth are there! All you have to do is taste!
