A new study published by FishingBooker has even ranked Arcachon as the top French destination for outdoor activities, ahead of Évian-les-Bains, Biarritz, Thonon-les-Bains, and Aix-les-Bains. An ideal getaway combining the ocean, bike paths, and the Pilat Dune
To compile its ranking, FishingBooker compared 49 French cities and towns based on eight criteria: cycling and hiking trails, access to water, fishing opportunities, green spaces, air pollution, precipitation, and population density. Arcachon stands out in particular for the concentration of activities available within a relatively compact area. The study identified 1,008 cycling routes, 70 hiking trails, and 10 fishing spots.
By bike, from the center of Arcachon, you can ride along the waterfront, reach Pereire Beach, and then continue under the pine trees toward Le Moulleau and Le Pyla. The tourist office currently lists 21 cycling routes around the Bay, with trails that also connect to several neighboring towns.
To extend your trip beyond Pereire Beach, you can continue on to the famous Pilat Dune, accessible by bike from Arcachon. At 106 meters high and 2.7 kilometers long, Europe’s tallest dune offers panoramic views of the Banc d’Arguin, Cap-Ferret, the ocean, and the Landes Forest.
The Bassin also makes it easy to mix up activities over a weekend. Kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, sailing, and fishing complement walks and bike rides. Hiking enthusiasts can head inland from the coast to the Camicas Forest or explore the “Ville d’Hiver,” known for its 19th-century villas.
