2024 brought us a magnificent boreal aurora, a moon with pink and blue reflections but also a shooting star shower this summer… But what does 2025 have in store for us in terms of astronomical phenomena? Mark your calendars to make sure you don’t miss a thing!
All the astronomical phenomena not to be missed in 2025
A meteor shower in January 2025
A meteor shower will light up the sky from December 28, 2024 to January 12, 2025. This phenomenon, known as the Quadrantids, will be at its peak on the nights of January 2 and 3. As usual, we recommend a spot away from artificial light, if possible around a clear vantage point like Mont Valérien! You’ll put every chance on your side!
Two eclipses in March 2025
Astronomy fans are in for a treat this March! On March 14,a lunar eclipse will be visible in the sky! While you’ll be able to admire it most clearly in Quebec, it will also be possible to see it in France. Likewise, a solar eclipse will be visible in Europe from March 29. Note that these are two partial eclipses, i.e. the stars are not perfectly aligned. We’ll have to wait until August 12, 2026 for a total solar eclipse to be visible in Europe (and particularly in Spain and Portugal).
Northern lights in 2025?
Remember: on the night of March 24-25, 2024, aurora borealis colored the skies over France. Well, good news: you should know that in 2025, this phenomenon might well be repeated according to CNRS researchers! Indeed, the sun evolves every 11 years, and produces this kind of phenomenon during this cycle. And as luck would have it, we’re right in the middle of the peak!
While no precise date has yet been released, we do know that several boreal auroras should be visible in July 2025. This corresponds with solar flares, which are expected to be particularly intense.
