About forty kilometers north of Paris, the Carnelle Forest stretches between the towns of Presles, Montsoult, Luzarches, and Viarmes. Covering nearly 1,000 hectares, this forest is one of the largest in the Val-d’Oise. Less crowded than Fontainebleau or Rambouillet, it attracts those seeking a more secluded spot in nature, far from the crowds.
A forest offering a change of scenery just a stone’s throw from Paris
With its varied terrain, the forest is unique in that it is home to the highest point in the Val-d’Oise, which reaches an altitude of about 210 meters. This elevation gain offers hikers a bit more variety than in other forests in the Paris region. The trails climb gently among the oaks and beeches before opening up into clearings offering beautiful views of the surrounding area. Fall is particularly popular here for its colors, while spring reveals dense, vibrant vegetation.
For cycling and hiking enthusiasts, several trails traverse the forest, including some fairly accessible loops. The paths alternate between wide forest avenues and narrower trails that wind through the undergrowth. The tranquility of the area is highly appreciated by hikers, especially since the forest remains relatively uncrowded despite its proximity to the capital.
The Carnelle Forest also hides a few historical curiosities. Among them is the Pierre Turquaise, a megalithic monument dating back to the Neolithic era, considered one of the largest dolmens in Île-de-France. Further on, ancient remains linked to forestry operations bear witness to the history of the site, which was once used to supply wood to Paris.
From Paris, the Presles-Courcelles or Viarmes stations on Line H provide quick access to the forest. Several parking lots are also located around the forest for those arriving by car.
