At the height of summer, when the heatwave is back in full force, there’s only one thing we want: to find a cool place to cool off. So we head for the pools and water parks, take refuge in the tree-lined estates and eat ice cream. To continue the theme, we’ve found a super-cute, under-covered square in Paris for you: the Square des Batignolles. With its mini waterfall, stream and English-style gardens, it couldn’t be more charming.
A little-known secret Paris square surrounded by water
This haven of peace nestled in the 17ᵉ arrondissement, in the heart of the very bobo district of Les Batignolles, covers more than 16,000 m² ! Its picturesque layout draws inspiration from nature to recreate magnificent spaces.

The square features a small stream running through the English garden, a picturesque rocky waterfall, a grotto and a pond home to a myriad of ducks, black swans and red carp. Water is one of the park’s central features, as it meanders through the park, creating a welcome Zen atmosphere. Slightly undulating, the park almost gives you the impression of being in the heart of the English countryside. Its many different species of trees, many of them exotic, make it a feast for the eyes all year round.

A former wasteland, it was laid out in the Second Empire at the request of Napoleon III, who wanted to create several English-style gardens in the capital. The park has always been a haven for Parisians in search of nature, and is particularly popular in summer when the zenith is at its height. The singer Barbara was born a stone’s throw from here, and evoked this cherished childhood square in her song Perlimpinpin.
What’s more, our dog friends are allowed on a leash and can play in the caniparc with their four-legged friends all day long! In short, a truly magnificent square for everyone, to be discovered over the next few days.
