It’s true, Paris is blessed with some of the finest libraries in the world. And among them is the Sorbonne inter-university library. This architectural jewel, accessible only to professors, researchers and students, will be opening its doors to the general public this September during the European Heritage Days. A unique opportunity to admire one of the capital’s most beautiful libraries, but also one of its most secretive…
A secret library in Paris, finally revealed to the general public

This hidden gem will make you want to dive right back into your studies. Comprising five themed rooms, from antiquity to contemporary history, the Sorbonne’s inter-university library is a jewel of Parisian (and French) heritage. Specializing in the Humanities, it is reserved exclusively for students, professors, researchers and librarians throughout the year. Its Jacqueline de Romilly reading room is certainly one of the most remarkable. With its moldings, paintings and distinctive sky-blue color, it exudes a magical atmosphere…

In September, the secret library will be open to all curious Parisians during the Journées du Patrimoine in Paris. As every year, the third weekend in September will mark the opening of the library to the general public. Over 250 years old, the library first opened to the public in 1770. Back then, the library was housed in the Collège Louis-le-Grand, now the Lycée Louis-le-Grand.

You can visit not only the library, but also the university and its prestigious amphitheatres on free guided tours. In fact, the library is an integral part of the Chancellerie des universités de Paris en Sorbonne itinerary.
For your chance to enter the Palais académique, which opens from 10 a.m. to 4.30 p.m., you’ll have to queue at the entrance, at 47 rue des Ecoles… The program and timetable will soon be available on their website.
See you on Saturday September 20 and Sunday September 21, 2025, for an unmissable cultural weekend.
