February is slowly approaching, and with it the promise of slightly milder days. If you dream of spending a relaxing weekend, we can only recommend the seaside. Head to Mers-les-Bains, a coastal village located right between Picardy and Normandy, which, believe us, is not lacking in charm. With its colorful houses, invigorating seaside and rich history , it’s no surprise that this village was voted the second favorite among French people. A love story that, as you’ll see, goes back a long way!
Mers-les-Bains: a coastal village near Paris
With over 500 colorful villas and breathtaking views of the seafront, Mers-les-Bains is a real gem that is not to be missed. This former fishing port saw its destiny completely transformed in the 19th century. At the time, thermal cures and sea bathing were renowned for their health benefits, and the wealthiest people flocked to the village to enjoy its natural resources. That’s why we can say that Mers-les-Bains became the first seaside resort in our country.

It was also during this period that the village became more affluent! Magnificent Art Nouveau villas were built, all facing the seafront. Now protected and pampered, these colorful houses are the symbol of the town! Carefully restored family homes that you can admire and photograph all year round.

While summer is the favorite season for tourists, especially in July when the seaside resort goes back in time with its Baigneurs festival, it deserves just as much attention (if not more) outside of the season.

Voted the second most popular village in France in 2024, Mers-les-Bains is accessible by train from the Gare du Nord in Paris. Allow about 2.5 hours of travel time before you can set foot on the sand. The town will charm you with its breathtaking architecture and relaxing setting.
