In the heart of the Loire Valley, just 15 km from Tours, stands the Château de Villandry, the last great Renaissance château built in the region. While its architectural elegance attracts heritage enthusiasts, it is above all its gardens, considered to be among the finest in Europe, if not the world, that make the place so famous.
This château, just 3 hours from Paris, is home to some of the finest gardens in the world.
Built in the early 16th century by Jean le Breton, minister of François I, Château de Villandry is a perfect example of French Renaissance architecture: symmetrical, elegant and open to the surrounding countryside. Classified as a historic monument, it has survived the centuries without losing any of its splendor, thanks in no small part to the Carvallo family, who have been responsible for its restoration and upkeep since the early 20th century.
The gardens of Villandry cover more than six hectares and are divided into several thematic areas. The ornamental garden, with its perfectly trimmed geometric patterns, is best viewed from the château’s terraces. The unique decorative vegetable garden combines colorful vegetables and flowers in symmetrical compositions that change with the seasons. There’s also a soothing water garden, a labyrinth to lose yourself in during a stroll, and a more contemporary sun garden bathed in light. Each plot is meticulously tended, offering a magnificent spectacle whatever the season.
And if there’s no right or wrong season to visit this incredible estate, it’s worth noting that numerous events punctuate its activities throughout the year. For example, during the upcoming Journées du Patrimoine (Heritage Days), you’ll be able to attend workshops with stone masons, upholsterers, painters and cabinet makers, as well as take part in guided horse-drawn carriage tours.
In short, to visit the Château de Villandry is to plunge into a world where Renaissance architecture dialogues in perfect harmony with some of the world’s most refined gardens. The site offers much more than a simple visit, it’s a true interlude out of time that awaits us!
