Already ranked as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France, this incredible Gothic village has been awarded the title of “Village Préféré des Français” in 2025. Just 3 hours by train from Paris, it’s an extraordinary medieval gem to discover, not only for its heritage, but also for its atmosphere and year-round entertainment.
A nugget of medieval lanes and bucolic paths
When it comes to a village that combines authentic charm, rich history and a peaceful ambience, Saint-Antoine-l’Abbaye ticks all the boxes. Located in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France, this small Isère village was awarded the title of “Village préféré des Français 2025” (French Favourite Village 2025) following the show hosted by Stéphane Bern on July 2. This accolade, a source of pride for the region, rewards a place where heritage, tradition and the good life blend perfectly.

The jewels of the village are its cobbled streets, half-timbered houses, medieval market hall and imposing Gothic abbey church. Listed as a Monument Historique since 1840, the religious edifice proudly dominates the valley and remains one of the finest examples of religious architecture in the Dauphiné. Its sculpted facade, 18th-century grand staircase and period stained glass windows are as impressive as the view over the village rooftops. Next door, the Musée de Saint-Antoine-l’Abbaye retraces the history of the Antonine Order and offers an enchanting tour of the monastic gardens.
The medieval alleyways, known as goulets, are also well worth a visit. Their vaulted passageways and narrow facades immediately plunge you into medieval times. Between two strolls, you’ll discover small workshops where leatherworkers, ceramists and glassblowers work. These craftsmen perpetuate ancestral know-how, while adding a contemporary touch that brings the village to life.

Beyond its walls, Saint-Antoine-l’Abbaye opens onto a remarkable natural setting. Located at the gateway to the Vercors mountains, the village offers numerous hiking trails and spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. Just a few hundred meters away, you’ll find medieval alleyways and bucolic footpaths.
Much more than a contest-winning town, Saint-Antoine-l’Abbaye is a concentrate of history and authenticity, a stopover where time seems to slow down. For lovers of old stones, the curious or walkers in search of a little peace and quiet, this is a destination to discover without delay.
And now is the perfect time to discover it. Visitors have been flocking here ever since, but the atmosphere remains peaceful, especially on weekdays and off-peak weekends. It’s up to you!
