Just over an hour by train from Paris, the city of Amiens is home to an extraordinary monument. Notre-Dame Cathedral in Amiens is quite simply the largest Gothic cathedral in France. A monumental building listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it has dominated the city since the 13th century.
In Amiens, quite simply the largest Gothic cathedral in France
Construction began in 1220, and the cathedral was built in record time for the era. In just a few decades, the builders created a masterpiece of classical Gothic architecture. With a nave reaching over 42 meters in height, it surpasses all other French cathedrals in terms of interior volume. Upon entering, the feeling of space is immediately striking.

Covered with hundreds of sculptures depicting biblical scenes, saints, and medieval figures, the western façade is one of the most spectacular features of the monument. In the center, the famous “Beau Dieu d’Amiens” welcomes visitors. Originally, these sculptures were painted. Every summer and at certain times of the year, a sound and light show recreates the colors of the period on the façade, bringing the medieval appearance of the monument back to life.
Inside, the stained glass windows, most of which have been restored, filter the light, highlighting the slender vaults and richly decorated choir. The ambulatory and side chapels offer a chance to admire particularly fine sculpted details. The cathedral also has 16th-century wooden stalls, renowned for the precision of their engraved scenes.

Amiens Cathedral is also linked to the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. It houses a relic attributed to Saint John the Baptist, which made it an important stopping place in the Middle Ages. Even today, it attracts visitors who come for its history as much as for its architecture.
Located in the city center, close to the hortillonnages (floating gardens) and the banks of the Somme, it is the highlight of any trip to Amiens. You can easily plan a day or a weekend to discover the cathedral, the Saint-Leu district, and the house of Jules Verne.
Massive and spectacular, Amiens Cathedral remains one of the greatest masterpieces of European Gothic architecture. An impressive visit just a few miles from the capital, it is ideal for an accessible and exotic cultural outing.
