After its major exhibition on metal, the Philharmonie will be celebrating disco and exploring all its facets! History, political and societal dimensions, musical inspirations, iconic figures and the aesthetics of the genre will be deciphered from February 14, 2025.
Disco music takes over the Philharmonie de Paris
Disco balls, tight-fitting, sequined outfits, bell-bottoms… The word disco conjures up a whole host of images! In 2025, a 100% disco exhibition will open at the Philharmonie de Paris.
Born in the United States in the early 70s, disco is a musical style that blends funk, gospel and soul. From this heritage of black American culture, disco has spawned a genre that is as hedonistic as it is political and powerful. Chic, Donna Summer, Giorgio Moroder and Village People were just some of the musical ambassadors of a genre that became a global phenomenon!
In France, a disco wind also blew from the mid-70s. A handful of artists (Cerrone, Patrick Juvet, Patrick Hernandez…) seized on the genre and delivered some of the most popular hits on dancefloors even decades after their release!
An exhibition exploring the roots of disco music
With this exhibition devoted to disco music, the Philharmonie aims to shake up the clichés that cling to the genre and invite the public to explore its origins and discover its many facets.
Disco is a music made for partying, but it also carries with it a number of social and political demands linked to the American context of the late 60s. The exhibition will also look at how disco created a unique and unprecedented stage design for the era (with discotheques, the emergence of DJs, choreography…).
Finally, the aesthetic and more global dimension of disco will also feature prominently in the exhibition. Archival photos, flamboyant outfits from the ’70s, advertisements and TV shows all bear witness to the discomania that swept the world following the 1977 release of the hit film Saturday Night Fever (starring John Travolta). So, are you ready to relive the crazy disco era?
