Of all the things to do to celebrate the festive season, a trip outside the walls of Paris is a great idea for a family or a couple. And to make the most of one of Europe’s most beautiful Christmas markets, hop on the train to discover the Venice of the North. After Colmar, Strasbourg and Nuremberg, we’re now discovering the incredible program planned for Bruges at the end of the year.
Two magical Christmas markets just a train ride from Paris
During the Advent season, Bruges transforms itself into an open-air Christmas scene . The 2025 edition of its “Winter Glow” event returns this year from November 21, 2025 to January 4, 2026. In this magical atmosphere, two distinct markets come to life in the city center, each with its own identity and charm.
The first market will take place on the Grand-Place, the historic heart of Bruges, under the gaze of the city’s imposing belfry. Here, the traditional spirit of the Christmas market will be on display: wooden chalets, sparkling decorations, a skating rink or artificial ice depending on the year, and a gourmet offer that will delight all visitors.
Just a few minutes’ walk away, the second market will be located in the Place du Simon Stevin. More intimate, this section focuses on local crafts and quality creations: carved toys, Belgian lace, design objects and regional delicacies. The atmosphere is calmer, perfect for strolling away from the crowds and finding gifts to put under the tree.
For the perfect day out, you can start with the bustle of the Grote Markt on the Grand-Place, sample the livelier atmosphere, then head to the Place Simon Stevin and discover all its stalls of local artisans. Both experiences are part of Winter Glow, a global celebration of the city’s festive season. In addition to the markets, it will be possible to take part in an incredible 3.5-kilometre immersive light trail, orchestrated around unexpected locations in the city.
And beyond the magic of Christmas, Bruges is well worth a visit at any time of year. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city can be explored on foot or along its romantic canals. Admire the Grand-Place and its belfry, the medieval streets lined with brick facades, and the museums dedicated to the Flemish masters. Sweet tooths will delight in the many artisan chocolate shops, while local breweries invite you to enjoy a Belgian beer in a convivial atmosphere. A city full of charm, combining heritage, gastronomy and the good life.
Another alternative without leaving Paris: the Marché de Noël de la Villette (Place de la Fontaine aux Lions) for a guaranteed Alpine atmosphere, complete with skating rink and Zurich fondue chalet!
