It’s one of the gastronomic trends of the moment. Food markets , or food courts in English, are becoming increasingly popular in major cities around the world. Whether covered or open-air, they offer a multitude of bars and restaurants all in one place. No more endless debates about where and what to eat! In these convivial places, the offer is varied, the prices often attractive, and there’s something for everyone.
Among all these gastronomic hotspots, some really stand out. Food & Wine, the leading culinary magazine, highlighted this in a recent article listing the best food markets on the planet, as part of the second annual Global Tastemakers Awards. A panel of experts with discerning palates scoured the globe to identify the 13 best food markets. This year, Barcelona’s famous Boqueria took first place. Rome manages the feat of appearing twice on the list. France is also represented, with a Parisian covered market setting the benchmark.
Best food markets in the world: Food & Wine ranks a historic Paris venue
Paris boasts a number of exceptional food courts, but it’s the Marché des Enfants Rouges in the Marais district that comes 8th. It’s the oldest covered food market in Paris, and has been delighting food lovers since 1615! And our team can only confirm it, as you’ll see in our recent video.

Among the assets of the Marché couvert des Enfants Rouges, Food & Wine highlights its intimate atmosphere. The magazine also appreciates its selection of quality local products and French specialties. The experts give special mention to Les Enfants Du Marché, run by Michael Grosman and chef Shunta Susuki. This stand, specializing in seafood, was a unanimous winner with its mussels served in a delicious gorgonzola cream sauce. Does that make your mouth water too?
