Hidden from view for over 800 years, the Royal Abbey of Chaalis is one of the jewels of the Oise region. Here you’ll discover its sublime château, orangery, XIIIᵉ century chapel and, of course, its abbey. Partly in ruins, this Cistercian abbey is a wonder to behold at sunset. In its heyday, it was one of the most important in the kingdom during the reign of King Louis VI. Yet the site has lost none of its charm, quite the contrary. In fine weather, magnificent old roses begin to bloom throughout the estate. A splendid sight to be admired from spring through to summer.
A secret abbey of old roses on the outskirts of Paris
As if by magic, the estate is transformed in spring. Over 3,500 m², you’ll discover a magnificent rose garden, where flowers are grouped by hue along the paths. Its creator, Nélie Jacquemart-André, wanted to recreate a haven of peace, where gentleness, serenity and balance reign. A winning bet!
Since its creation in the early 20th century, the rose garden has undergone a number of modifications, including the addition of other rose species, as well as perennials to enliven the landscape. Among the old roses are gallic roses, known for their sweet fragrance. You can also admire climbing and drooping roses from Poland, which elegantly adorn the garden and its pergolas.
From May to June, flower lovers can admire the rose blossoms and enjoy their colors and delicate fragrances. In June,Rose Days celebrate the queen of flowers! It’s an opportunity to admire the different varieties, but also to meet passionate nurserymen who can advise you on how to care for this sometimes capricious, but oh-so-wonderful flower.
